What I Would Look For In A Mentor

Most of these mentoring programs are designed to hold your hand (and to some extent, hold you accountable) as they give you a system to get your first product developed and marketed. While this has obvious value, there's another course of action that I'd try first.

I recommend that you first purchase a less expensive product (click here to go to MaaMaw's favorite -- it's her link, not mine) -- and that's not the only course out there), work your way through it, and see where you stand. Once you've done that, if you're still not satisfied with your results, then you should attend a live conference, meet some of the "gurus", talk to them, and then decide which one you'd like to give your money to.

It's just me, but I'd have a hard time giving more than $1,000 for anything if I haven't met the person making the offer. And even at that, I've only really met three people I'd be willing to work with (MF, CM, and WC -- no more hints than that!).

It's also my impression that most "gurus" charge ridiculously high prices so they don't waste their time working with someone who isn't serious. That's another reason to attend a live Internet Marketing conference -- most people that would pay the admission fee, fly there, rent a car, stay in a hotel, and eat in restaurants for 3-4 days (not to mention endure the obligatory "pitchfests" that most seem to have) are really serious, hence the speakers / "gurus" are usually willing to spend time talking to people.

And having said that, if you're constantly getting "pitched" to participate in such a program, I'd take that as a red flag. A "hey, I have this service available and this is what it does" type e-mail is O.K. -- but do you really want to give your money to someone that seems to do this sort of thing as a major source of revenue? I'd rather give it to someone making hundreds of thousands of dollars per month actually marketing products in non-Internet Marketing niches. In this case, "those who can, do -- those who can't, teach" may apply.

Incidentally, this is not intended to be a judgment of the individuals mentioned in your post -- it's simply meant to be another factor you may want to consider. I have my own reasons for not doing business with one of the people you mentioned, but it has nothing to do with his products (HINT: Always read the Terms of Service on a website VERY carefully!).

Best wishes,
Tom

NOTICE TO SCUMBEEZLES
(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

By posting messages and/or content on the Friends In Business (Scams 101) Message Board, you give permission for Lesley Fountain/Friends In Business/Shoestring Success Publications to display, distribute and use the posting and content for publication, advertising, promotion, excerption or example.         In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
