I might test it again in the future, but last time I moved all my Google ads down, my income took a nosedive (maybe "crashed and burned" would be more accurate). I depend on it too heavily at this point, but maybe later...
Same with the store.
When I first got the site, I was fixated on making it look "purely educational" and sneaking in my store ads at the bottom.
Nobody saw them, then Mel came along and suggested I make them more "in your face." I make a pittance on product sales, but at least it's something, and before I moved the ads up, I made exactly nothing.
I love the idea of being a "free educational site," but unfortunately, AmericaZoo has to support me one day, so I can't pussyfoot around.
The way I see it, I'm competing with sites like TheBigZoo, which is clearly commercial -- but I can't compete with sites like Discovery, which can afford to have "purely educational" sections.

I think I'll end up organizing by vendor (like a mall). I realize it might not be as big a problem as I'm making it, but I do think it needs to be somewhat clear that "I am sending you off to this store to buy your giraffe slippers; I am not selling them to you."
