In Response To: PANIC SETTING IN.... Question about setting up a store with affiliate products.... (MaaMaw)
I WOULD NOT worry about what others are, or are not doing. Do what feels right to you.
If you start to worry that Joe Blow's Donkey Site has a bigger donkey pic than you do, Irvin's Snake Pit has more snakes, Clydes Parrot Store has more feather dusters that don't require leaving their site, you'll DRIVE YOURSELF NUTS!
Do what you're doing, and make it the best there is. PERIOD.
Hate to be blunt, but all you do when you worry about the guy next door is raise your temperature. You don't gain a thing by it, and you could well end up screwin' up a good thing. (Which is what you've got now, even though you're in your crawling stage.)
> Okay, I confess... I'm freaking out.
> I've divided Mr. Giraffe into several pages, one of which is "The
> Giraffe Store."
> Backtracking a bit:
> I have a "Zoo Gift Shop" on AmericaZoo right now -- slapped up
> quickly with just some banners of various "Critter" sites for
> which I am an affiliate. I do make some sales, so it's working to
> some extent, but now that I'm ready to make my first individual critter
> store, I want to do it the best possible way.
> I just got done visiting some zoo sites -- TheBigZoo in particular, which
> is so good it just scares me to death -- and it hit me betwixt the
> eyeballs (I can't imagine why I didn't notice it before)...
> Their store is set up with a shopping cart.
> You buy everything directly from them.
> How can I possibly compete with something like this when each of my
> product links goes to whichever of the sites I happen to be affiliated
> Okay, so I'm not competing with them -- we have different visitors (I
> hope) -- so maybe a better question would be, "How can I possibly
> succeed doing it this way?"
> Someone wants the 6" figurine... so they click on it and they're
> transported to AnimalDel (in a new window, but still, that's where they
> have to buy it).
> But they also want the 6' stuffed giraffe... they're beamed to StuffedArk.
> Lucky me! I've caught a rich one! Now they want to buy the
> giraffe crib... off they go to MiniTots.
> Am I doing something wrong, or do places like TheBigZoo stock their own
> inventory or use drop-shippers or what??
> Obviously they aren't using affiliate programs...
> I've long felt affiliate programs aren't the way to go for something like
> this, but I simply don't have time in my life to do it any other way right
> So how should I set up my store... like I was planning to, with categories
> of products linked to the affiliate site and hope they just don't leave in
> Is there another way?
> Blessum yewz, Dear Smart Ones.

| PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT. It has been done before, but never successfully. In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH: I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday. I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish. I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?). I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
