Before I answer, I have a question for you:
Why do you ask?
Have you noticed some rule being broken? If so, speak right up, because we can't possibly catch everything, though we do try.
Answer:
I have never had a hard-and-fast rule for affiliate links within posts.
If someone is answering a question and says, "I happen to be an affiliate for this product that can solve your problem," and it's somebody we have reason to believe, I have no problem with it (hmmmm, isn't that what The Great Byrd said?).
To Summarize:
When Drive-By's do it -- zap!
When someone who habitually does it does it (nice sentence) -- zap!
When someone I feel is here only to recruit does it -- zap!
When someone I feel is here only to sell something does it -- zap!
When a moderator does it -- no problem, they've earned the right to do it occasionally.
When a trusted long-time FIBer does it in context -- no problem.
When a newbie who is obviously an enthusiastic participant does it in response to a question -- maybe no problem.
When I do it -- duh!
Final note:
Rules are made to be broken, but only when we say so.
Hope that clears things up... but really, wasn't The Great Byrd's reply just as good and a whole lot easier to follow?
