First things first...

Yes, your emails are here, among about 1200 spams (to my "personal" email address, guess I blew that somewhere huh?)... so sorry... explained below and will answer ASAP.

MY DEAR BOARD BUDDIES...

For the first time since 1998 (with the possible exception of the day my father died), I haven't even *looked* at this board since last Friday (EEE GADS! FIVE DAYS!!).

I still can't believe such a fancy "resort" kind of place had no high-speed internet.  My *best* connection was 16,000 bps, and typical was 11,000.  They had internet access on their own computers in the lobby and, strangely, that was even worse (although it was always connected so I can't figure out why).  It was SO slow that I couldn't get my email, I couldn't post messages, and I sure couldn't wait around for pages to load.

So anyhoo, after I posted my last message on Friday, I plucked out the last of my hair and decided not to touch it again til Saturday.

When I went to check in on Saturday afternoon, my modem was deader than a doornail (I had done NOTHING but disconnect the day before and close the machine).  After the usual hysterics, I gave up and tried to put it out of my mind for five days (fat chance).

We got home late last night, and here I am (on my MAGNIFICENT Cable Connection Which I Will Never Curse Again!!).

TECH HELP NEEDED...

I ran the modem troubleshooter, and it shows the modem is operating correctly.

Next step was to check that COM3 was not disabled, so I went to the link they gave me to "check devices" (or something), and I clicked on the tab they told me, where all the LPT and COM ports were supposed to be listed.

I was supposed to "select COM3" and make sure it was enabled.

It doesn't exist.

The only thing listed was LPT1.  No COM at all.

Another option was to assign a different COM port to the modem, so I went there to try.  There are 256 COM ports listed, and I tried at least 100 of them and they ALL showed they were being used by another application.

I tried to download an updated driver, but it says the driver I have is the best choice for my modem; no updates needed.

I have run SpyBot and AdAware three times since I got home (with most recent updates), cleaned everything up, and it's still not working.

I have run AVG Virus with updated virus definitions and it's still not working.

I have shut the computer down several times and it's still not working.

I have no clue how to get my COM port back, and Toshiba help just keeps telling me the same thing and none of it works.

HELP??
