That statement by Mel is only half true. Yes it is cheaper to keep selling to current/old customers but that is not sound advice for new businesses that have not reached a certain maturity/saturation level (like yours).

While getting new customers is expensive, it is necessary in order to someday get you to the point where you can stop focusing so much on getting new customers and just try to keep getting orders from your current customer base.

Simply put, it simply does not apply to you unless you know for a fact that you have all the customer you can handle. Keep getting those new customers as well as continue to sell to the old ones. Let's face it, ALL of you curent customer are not going to buy form you every time you approach them, for various reasons beyond your control (ie. advertising budget).
