I asked my husband about our state laws concerning hauling of livestock...he didn't know right off the top of his head, however he had this concern...the U-Haul is enclosed with no ventilation, this could cause a problem in the form of carbon monoxide poisioning in your calves. Your truck's fumes could easily get into the trailer. I'm betting U-Haul would definitely take issue with having animals in their trailer and if they find out you run the risk of having all sorts of legal trouble with them. Around here (Arkansas) there are places that rent horse trailers, maybe you could go that route.
