There are lots of places where you can use free Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity).
It's easy to find web sites devoted to this topic, and lots of them list exactly where you can get online using Wi-Fi, whether free or someplace that charges you.
Truck stops often have Wi-Fi. So do a lot of coffee shops and fast food restaurants. Book stores are another option. Places like The UPS Store and other mailbox rental shops often have it, too.
Campgrounds often have Wi-Fi as well. I've seen a few web sites where people travel across the country and keep track of where they find Wi-Fi, including campgrounds that offer it.
And some cities are creating Wi-Fi canopies in specific areas. Where I live, several blocks of the downtown area are under a canopy so all you have to do is open your computer and it will sense that Wi-Fi is available, and it will let you get on the internet right then and there without paying a dime. It cost the city about $80,000 to set it up in a small area.
Other cities have larger Wi-Fi canopies. Austin, TX, I believe is one of them, and there are many, many others.
