Unfortunately they must have not have quite fit the bill, but you must have been extremely close to what they are looking for.
Maybe you should just chalk it up to experience. Every no leads you closer to a yes.
If you really would like to work for the company you could call back and nicely grill them on everything. Show them what you know. Ask if there is something more that they were looking for that maybe you did not convince them the first time that you could do. Let them know you saw the ad, the title which you believe (to say it nice) came from you, etc.
Any company can be ruthless. A company I worked for asked for how to improve things, so I proposed in writing what I could do to manage, co-ordinate and improve workflow. Management loved the idea, but passed the improved work scheme onto others.
Unfortunately few places grasp the importance of having the best employees although they always think they do. A motivated employee who knows how to think through problems and gets things done is a valuable asset to any company. Harvey McKay (motivational speaking legend) once said of his envelope business there was always an opening for this type of person.
