I ran a classified ad site...

In Response To: What is it about classified ads? (P. Drammel)

I ran a classified ad site. This was a number of years ago... maybe '95-96. At that time there wasn't near the amount of people using the web, but still, people who wanted to place a calssified ad didn't stop to read anything on the site. They were just there to post ads.

By the end of '96 they weren't even visiting the site to post. You see... there were a few hundred thousand free classified ad sites, but only so many popular classified ad scripts. So the popular scripts being used, and the URL's of the sites, were programmed into software called ad blasters. So the real powere users didn't even have to visit your site to post an ad.

On many days, it was the norm to receive over 2,000 ads in one day. I studied these ads, and tried to sell stuff to these posters.... even display ads which would make their ad stand out from the crowd, but nobody read the ads... they just posted.

I shouldn't say "nobody." If the truth be told I did get a couple of jobs out of it, but they were very few and far between.

I'm not surprised that someone would mention putting up a calssified ad site though. Before I read this post I made a comment on Willie message board. It was more about the discussion of safelists, but I said:

There are some of us who had experience with safelists from the early years. Although, I understand some self-proclaimed guru's were denouncing the arguments and any similarity between 1995-97 and now, they wouldn't have been able to sell this concept if they didn't.

Another trend I see starting to come back from the early years is blasting ads to free classified sites. It didn't work back then, but I expect, pretty soon, someone will convince those who didn't have this experience, that it is the next "big" thing.

Mind you I did have a couple of clients over the years try something similar. One of them paid for this deal where he would get 1,000,000 hits over the course of a month. That equals (over 30 days) 33.3 thousand per day. He wanted to make sure that the server would be able to withstand this onslaught. The deal the other fellow got was similar in nature.

I kept a close watch on their bandwidth over the next month and there was barely any noticable increase in traffic, although I understand they did receive a lot of spam.

Quite frankly... and it's only personal opinion based on my eperience, I would find some more productive uses of my time and money.

Best Regards,
Steve MacLellan

NOTICE TO SCUMBEEZLES
(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

By posting messages and/or content on the Friends In Business (Scams 101) Message Board, you give permission for Lesley Fountain/Friends In Business/Shoestring Success Publications to display, distribute and use the posting and content for publication, advertising, promotion, excerption or example.         In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
