Posted By: S. Tanna In Response To: TOTAL CONFUSION about selling/protecting an e-book through Paypal (or anywhere for that matter)... (MaaMaw)

First, things NOT to do
1. Don't call your thankyou page thankyou.html (etc)
2. Don't link to your thankyou from any of your other web pages, except via the payment process (to avoid it getting spidered)
3. Some people will tell you to put your thankyou page in robots.txt to stop it being spider. Don't. Your robots.txt file can be viewed by ANYBODY by typing www.yoururl.com/robots.txt and if they do that, they'd now know your thank you page.
To do it properly:
What you really need is a server-side script (CGI, PHP, etc). This is set as your thankyou page. Some scripts collect info from the customer before payment, which they then use after payment.
When the customer arrives at the thank you page/script, the script can (a) check they have arrived thru the payment system, (b) send them an email (if they entered their email earlier), (c) display the thank you page text.
And if the person arrives at the thank you page/script improperly, it can do something else, like say, no access granted or whatever.
There are some items that may be suitable for your particular purpose, listed here: eBooks ecommerce and sales tools.
To do it improperly but quick and dirty:
If you are only getting started, and don't think you will sell too many initially, you can just use a static HTML thankyou page, and change its URL every few days (be sure to delete the old one, and tell the ecommerce system the new one).... at least that works on ClickBank
You can always upgrade to a scripted system later
ClickBank questions:
> I don't understand why people are selling their products
DIRECTLY through Clickbank when there is no affiliate involved.
Not everybody who has a credit or debit card, has a PayPal account. Not by a long chalk.
> Huh? Clickbank can adjust the final retail price of your product? That seems odd... ??
Technically you are selling your product to ClickBank, and they are reselling your product to the customer.
I'm not aware of ClickBank ever having adjusted the price of the product (except to add VAT when selling to European Union residents), but I imagine there might be some legal reason (price fixing laws maybe????) that they have to maintain that flexibility.
Put ClickBank to work on your site

PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT. It has been done before, but never successfully. In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace. NEWS FLASH: I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday. I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish. I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?). I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!" Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures. In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact. And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!). |
