From what I've heard, SE sees mydomain as "mydomain" and it sees my-domain as "my domain" (they don't acknowledge the dash, so treat them as seperate words).
Therefore, if you wanted to put your keywords in your domain name, you'd rather have the "my domain"
Humans respond better when they see the site name with dashes, they just can't remember to type the dash. Makes you kind of think:
http://www.adopt-a-kitten.com
vs.
http://www.adoptakitten.com
The former is easier to read by the human eye. Following good marketing rules, you have your key words in your domain name, and the SE will see it as "adopt kitten" (most will ignore the "a")
The latter, you have to stop and think about it,and at a quick glance, could easily be over looked, because you don't recognize it.
However, when a person tries to recall the website from memory, they will normally type in the latter into the address bar.
It seems that I read somewhere that SE's don't like redirects because this is a common tactic of spammers (SE spammers).
I would agree, and think that you would set the former (www.adopt-a-kitten.com) as your domain name, and submit it to the SE's. Then register the latter (www.adoptakitten.com) and redirect it to the former. But do your rankings get hit for the redirect?
By the way, I don't even know if the above site is even valid. I just used it as an example, I guess cause I passed a sign the other day for "free kittens to good home"
Just wondering what would be better?
