Legitimate mystery/secret shopper sites have you fill out name/address etc. info and make sure you understand that you are an independent agent and that they don't take out taxes, etc. They then put you through some training to make sure that you understand and are capable of reporting what the vendor wants to know. They send you to the place of business with very specific instructions. You need to remember what those are because you cannot go into the business with the multiple-page form; that would tip off the employees! :) You often have to check out specific departments and the restroom if there is one. You often have to engage an employee in conversation to find out how friendly, helpful and knowledgeable they are. Otherwise you pretend to be a typical customer and make a small purchase. You are reimbursed for your time (usually $5-$10) plus a small amount for what you bought. A local health food store pays $6 for your time and $6 for you purchase. You have to spend at least $6. Restaurants have you eat a meal. Banks have you open an account, car dealers have you go through the whole purchase process, etc. AND THEN CONTACT THE MANAGER SO YOU DON'T REALLY HAVE THAT ACCOUNT AND YOU DID NOT REALLY BUY THE CAR!
Even the car dealer shops only pay around $50 and that is because you have to clean out your car as if you were going to trade it in, and go through the credit check, etc. There is no way Wal-Mart would pay $100.
After everything is done, you submit your findings on a multiple-page form on line or by fax or over the phone, and include your receipt (or a copy of it.) You are reimbursed at the end of the month.
