Hi, folks - sorry to start a new thread, but I'm getting dizzy going round the corners of the thread below :)

Thanks to Wendy first of all - I downloaded a copy of the LMA directory and managed to populate the directory (I've edited it's appearance only slightly). The hardest thing I found was to get the directory entries to show up - but I added in a new link in the admin control panel - and that seemed to force things a little. The "populate using DMOZ information" is absolutely fantastic :O)- Duncan Carver has done a great job.

Now, to MawMaw (and others) -

here's a quick "how to"

First of all - set up your MySQL database - to do this you have to go to your hosting control panel (your hosting package should have this facility these days But if you have no spare MySQL databases you may have to upgrade your hosting package. I think it is possible to use an existing MySQL database with new tables and info, but I have never done this so don't want to recommend anything.)

Go to the MySQL area of your hosting control panel - for those using cPanel it's in the section "Site Management Tools"
Click the MySQL databases link. This will show existing(if any) MySQL databases and let you create a new one.
Create a new MySQL database - in this case call it directory (or anything else you like. What cPanel will do is create a database name using your hosting login name plus the new database name you just made - eg username_directory
The next stage within this section of the control panel is to create a user to administer the database - for the purposes of this discussion, you can create a username admin and give it a password - and once again, you will find that the cPanel setup means that it looks like username_admin
The last stage in this section of the hosting control panel is to assign the user to the database. There is a section which says "Grant permissions on a MySQL database to a MySQL user" which has two drop-down menus. Select your new database from the first with your new user from the second, click the Grant Permissions button - and that means that the database can be administered properly.
Make a note of your settings before you close the hosting control panel - particularly if you're sensible and have given the database an obscure password.

Getting the MySQL information correct in the settings section of the installed script is important.

The script will look for the information in the following format

MYSQL Sever: localhost
MYSQL Username: username_admin
MYSQL Password: password
MYSQL Database: username_directory

I'll get to the second bit later on today - got a couple of things I have to attend to - breakfast being one of them!
