For those of you who think scams are all about on-line bizzops, it "just ain't so'. A few days back, I scanned the help-wanted columns, saw something of interest in the field of computer technical support, and responded. It was supposedly an ad for techs, paying approximately 35 grand a year. Yesterday, I received a phone call. It turns out the ad was placed by a school, looking for tech people wanting to get credentials to further their careers. No job, no 35K income, no nothing, really except a chance to take course ON LINE to get your MCSE and half a dozen other credentials. It would be a two-week course, and cost 13 grand. Oh, yes, you get a laptop that has VoIP on it, too.
No, before you ask, I didn't go for it. First, because they lied to me in their ad to begin with. Why, at this point, should I believe anything else they say? Second, if you're going for technical credentials it's probably going to take more than two weeks to really do it right. Otherwise, you end up as one of those poor saps with half the alphabet after their names but unable to de-bug a simple script. It's probably going to take some hands-on work, too. Not just reading about it and cramming for tests. Third-- OK, I'd heard of these kind of schools before. You've undoubtedly seen a variant in your in-box before you set your spam filters to weed them out. Diploma mills. Credential mills. "Get your degree and get a good job" factories. You get enough degrees that you could pass yourself off as a thermometer, credentials and diplomas paper your walls so you'll never have to paint them again, and--- you still can't get a good job. Reason: Businesses have found out about these places, and they know what a prospective employee with one of these documents is likely to be really worth. They know which schools to watch out for in advance.
So, a word to the wise. Not all help wanted ads are really looking for help. Some are looking for the gullible. Save your money, and go to a real school. It'll be worth more in the long run.

PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT. It has been done before, but never successfully. In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace. NEWS FLASH: I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday. I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish. I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?). I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!" Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures. Although we may, from time to time, monitor or review discussions, postings and the like on the Friends In Business (Scams 101) Message Board, we are under no obligation to do so. You are likewise prohibited from posting any false claims against any company or individual. If you cannot accept or agree with the terms of service for this website and discussion board, you are advised not to post on this board. In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact. And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!). |
