I posted some time back about an open source ("free") anti-virus product called ClamWin, which is available at http://www.clamwin.com. It seems to be working well. One advantage that this product has over other free anti-virus software is that it can be used for commercial purposes, so if you're looking for a no-cost anti-virus solution for your business computers, this is a good candidate for evaluation.
If you decided to download it and use it, then I strongly recommend the following:
1. Set aside at least one day a week to check for updates. You can do that by clicking on the middle icon just below the menus. Better yet, check daily.
2. Subscribe to the "announce" mailing list for ClamWin (at http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=105508). This will tell you when a new version of the scanning engine is available so that you can download and install it. A new version just came out, and not being subscribed to the mailing list, I didn't know about it until I went to check for updates a few minutes ago. Out-of-date anti-virus software is a risk that you don't need to assume, especially when the software and updates are free. There is another mailing list you can subscribe to that is devoted to discussing problems with the software.
3. Make sure that you perform a full system scan at least once a week. You can start a scan by clicking on the right-most icon just below the menus.
4. If you really like the open source software, consider making a small donation to encourage future development.
As I said above, I really like it. It doesn't seem to slow down my computer, it has already caught a couple of things (but unlike most people, I sometimes go looking for problems as a part of my day job as a computer security person), and I do like the price.
