Previously, I posted asking Kelly het take on the Watkins Products decision to put some of their items in Wal-Marts, all across the US. I had heard elsewhere that it would be the beginning of the end for those dealers who were selling and/or sponsoring.

Kelly has been so busy working the business, her response is now buried half way down the forum. I'm moving it up for more to see.

"Well, my take on it is like a lot of other folks in Watkins--it's to build brand awareness.

There's a couple of new generations of adults that have never heard of Watkins. Watkins thought this one out carefully before proceeding, and here's why:

1. Walmart is only carrying a couple of the products--and will NOT be carrying the other 350-something products. The products they're carrying are mostly skin care.

2. Walmarts currently is selling around 1 product per month per store--hardly anything--and will not interfere with our business as individual representatives (this is the word from Mark Jacobs, the company VP).

3. Even though these products may appear at first to be cheaper than what you'll pay through a Watkins representative, the Watkins reps are also being offered special deals on these particular products so that they can "compete".

It's not affecting my own business." :)

Congratulations again Kelly, on having a business plan with a solid understanding of your products and customer base.

Too many people find it easier to view any change in a negative light.

Your positive attitude and understanding of direct marketing and it's potential for those willing to sell face-to-face. Focus on the possibities, and not on the slight competition of passive store displays. Your customers are buying from you. Many will see the value in having the home delivery and the full line of quality products, vs the potential savings of a few pennies on some cosmetics.
