I absolutely DETEST doing mailings. I feel I'm imposing on people. I am very uncomfortable sending useful information a few times, then sending a sales pitch. I have Mailloop sitting here to keep up my list (a dandy program, by the way!), but I still hate it. I don't like hearing, "I didn't sign up for your damn mailing list! Take me the f--- off!!" All the usual stuff that goes along with mailing lists. The "I really enjoyed that!" comments just don't make up for the "drop dead" ones.
I've read many times, "If you don't have a mailing list, you aren't in business."
Well I know that's not true -- I'm in business alright -- but I don't actively "sell" anywhere. That's not going to get me up to a living wage in this lifetime.
I'm doing the blog because...
(1) I loved doing Boardwatch, but it didn't pay (well it did, but you can't feed a family on $.21 an hour). This is a compromise. Much less demanding and no deadline.
(2) I loved being in the thick of things and knowing what was going on and being part of the boards. This gives me an excuse to do that. I haven't left home in two or three years.
(3) I can actively promote my sites and peddle my stuff, the way I would on a mailing list.
(4) It will drive more traffic to my sites.
I don't exactly mean "I hate blogging."
I love writing the posts. (Let's face it, I love to hear myself yap, anytime, anyplace -- I'll never have a better audience than me!!)
It's the whole concept I don't like. I think they're boring and a huge time-waster (you know how you can get on the net to find one single thing and 4 hours and 37 minutes later, you forgot what you were looking for but you have 96 more sites bookmarked??) (I can't even *imagine* what would happen if I added a pile of blogs to my itinerary!).
I like my board. I like conversations. The one-sidedness without even a head count is what bothers me. That could be why I've failed so miserably at mailings!!
But I do believe it's an important thing to do if I want to make a living out here, so I'm going to keep it up (like I said, I enjoy writing it).
And the FFAT one? That's for my own benefit more than anything. I need accountability, and that's going to be it. Hopefully, in the process of making myself accountable, I can sell my stuff and drive people to my FFAT site.
Luv,
MaaMaw
P.S. SEE how I like to talk? You ask a simple question, I write a novel. Blogging *should* be right up my alley! I think I'll feel better once I get a counter up (I'll just grit my teeth and do it) and once I start seeing links popping up in various places....

PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT. It has been done before, but never successfully. In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace. NEWS FLASH: I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday. I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish. I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?). I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!" Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures. If you cannot accept or agree with the terms of service for this website and discussion board, you are advised not to post on this board. In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact. And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!). |
