One of the newer no cost ad souces is Instant Buzz by Mike Chen.
As I've used it, it has the benefits of a "surf for hits" program... free traffic... without all the baloney.
It has a simple toolbar that displays a one line text ad that I can choose to click or not.
So far I've gotten about 7000 ad exposures. Click through is about average and, of course, that depends on your ad and ad writing skills.
The biggest benefit is that I hate to use a surf for hits program and stare repeatedly at the same sites again and again. I can't tell you how many viruses I've gotten from those things too.
By having a one line text ad, I think that traffic that ultimately DOES come is "prequalified" in a way that it isn't in a surf for hits program.
Too, surfing programs allow anyone to join. I think Mike Chen did everyone a service by having the program be invitation only.
So, for a NO COST system, it's been a real asset.
Drawbacks... no single program is going to do it all.
You still need to write articles, build pages, post (relevantly) to blogs, etc.
But every little bit helps.
