Yes, it's EXTREMELY important in our society. Unfortunately, without credit, it is difficult to qualify for credit. :-)
So you have to start with a secured credit card. Check with your local bank. And make sure the card reports your activity to at least one of the major 3 credit bureaus so you can start building some good credit.
After a while you should start receiving credit offers for unsecured credit cards.
There are some credit cards out there on the internet that you supposedly don't need a deposit for, however, they will usually stick you with HUGE "set up" fees so I would also recommend that whatever card you choose, read the terms of service before applying.
