In Response To: Save yourself a lot of time and aggravation... (Barry Stein)

Speaking here from 30 years' experience as a programmer and 8 years' experience as a webmaster, his advice is right on.

It depends on what you want to do. If you want to learn to design websites, a bit of HTML is useful to learn (but you'll need Flash and a lot of other skills (including a bit of PHP/Perl/dot-NET programming) to be competitive in the marketplace. If you want to make your own website, forget the stress and pick up FrontPage.

It's one of the top choices for designers, particularly if you don't need to be doing programmed things. It integrates easily with almost everything (something that Dreamweaver didn't do) and you can just cut-and-paste without any aggravation. Unlike CoffeeCup (which drove me nuts) you don't have to call up a browser view every time you want to see what your changes look like.

I'll second that, and add that there's a LOT of bad looking pages out there. I always recommend that novice designers go take a look at http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com to learn what NOT to do with their sites!

> You should not pay more than $10 a month for website hosting. I pay

Generally agreed -- it depends on what you want to do with your website.

A bit of advice here is to make your FIRST website for yourself or your pet or your family or something so you can learn how to make and upload a website and how to change it and use the file managers. It's not impossible to do but it CAN be quite confusing the first six times you try it.

DO NOT overpay for website. If you're learning, chances are you won't need a gazillion bells and whistles on your site. In fact, you can do it using the cheapest web hosting possible if you just use Paypal for your "shopping cart" and get up a nice little web page.

So... first things first... start with "what do you want your web page to do and what can you live without?" Start simple (maybe an order form or a link to a paypal shopping cart) and build from there.

But unless you've got $20,000 or more to throw at web programmers and designers and web hosts and advertising, don't shoot for the moon on your first steps out. Use the KISS principle: "Keep It Simple, Silly!" and don't spend more than you should.

NOTICE TO SCUMBEEZLES
(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

By posting messages and/or content on the Friends In Business (Scams 101) Message Board, you give permission for Lesley Fountain/Friends In Business/Shoestring Success Publications to display, distribute and use the posting and content for publication, advertising, promotion, excerption or example.         In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
